The Most BORING Country in the World....

The most boring capital city in the world... The people should run away and live in another country. But strangely, it didn't happen.

Malaysia is not a really large, nor rich country. Average is the more adequate word. 54% of the people are the indigenous Malays, 30% Chinese and 16% Indian, at least in the Peninsular (there are several other races, but I am not in the mood to calculate perfect percentage today). Multi-ethnicity. I am not saying we live SO agreeably next to each other, but the bloodshed and bigotry are kept at the very minimum (by force, law and if-you-don't-stop-playing-with-fire-we'll-sue-or-better-still-disown-you).

I am not saying the scenario is bad. I've read from several blogs (including some from this very country) stating that Malaysia is the MOST BORING PLACE ON EARTH (right after Iran). They told the world that stuff people take for granted like consuming alcohol, taking drugs, kissing in public, acquiring the service of a prostitute, gambling etc are taboo in the country. They said people are bored senseless here. They said people are not free and are constantly pinned down by the dictatorship government to obey the rules. They said people are not safe and are constantly living in fear of the Man. They said the government are forcing non-Muslims to be Muslims or suffer the consequences etc etc.

The most boring country on Earth?! Does consuming alcohol and renting sex workers makes you EXCITING and WONDERFUL? Is obeying the law for the good of the society, bad for world peace? Does having a leader who REALLY cares for the wellbeing of his people, eradicating those VERY few who are the real menace to the country, considered a dictatorship? Do we bomb churches and other places of worship? Does the IRS come knocking and persuade you to pay through our noses or die?

I love this country and even though it does have flaws, but as an intelligent being, I am so grateful I was born, raised, live and maybe die here. Too much freedom is BAD for your karma, I like saying this. Living in a free country does not mean you can do anything you want to do.

People has forgotten what 'anarchy' means.

So, if you don't have anything good to say for your own country, go and apply for the citizenship of the country you think is ideal enough to have you. People who have no loyalty should never be allowed to set foot anywhere on the motherland.

It must be reminded that traitors is one of the reason of the many major wars, fall of civilizations, occupations in human history.

I am so loving how they treat traitors in China.... a bullet in the head :)

p.s. - anyway, alcohol and pork CAN still be consumed, but by non-muslims only. NOn-muslims are also allowed to gamble. See? We are not ogres.

Agreed. To be honest, some criticisms are relavent e.g. our education system needs a huge revamp. But other things like forcing non-Muslims to be Muslims is pure crap. That statement may come from misunderstandings.

And I don't think Malaysia is the most boring place on earth. Perhaps, the people who claim that Malaysia is the most boring place on earth are boring themselves.

I am Malaysian and PROUD of it.

Interesting post. It is nice to hear someone who is totally loyal to the country they live in. You sound very rooted there in your work and your family. Oh, and your pets too. Smile. I did not know about non muslims able to gamble, eat pork and drink alcohol. In every country there are laws and there are different races. I believe it is good that different races and beliefs live together. Part of growing up is learning how to get along with other people, and sometimes people have different ideas and beliefs. Diversity can be stimulating and interesting.

Aizan; Yeah, me too. Proud to be Malaysian. But I am so not keen on the One Malaysia propaganda.

TechnoBabe; Having Islam as the national religion makes some people misinterpret many things. I like diversity too, but everybody must cooperate to have peace and prosperity. It has happened for a long long time since Independence, but these days we are facing firebrands who are so persistent rising racial / religious issues.

Well this may be a grass-is-greener-on-other-side case. People in India would say India is undeveloped and all messed up. And that everyone wants to go away(and some do). Most of them fail to see the rich traditions and whatever. It is also a funny fact that foreigners value our traditional factors so much while we just spit at them.

et; Very true et. We are never happy with what we have and say others got better stuff than we do. We emulate foreigners and one day we found out that we became them, and lost the unique identity which makes us different.

I don't know from where you read those. I bet those people writing about how boring Malaysia is most likely have never visited Malaysia or experienced this country themselves. They probably just read what's on the mainstream media and formed their opinions from there.

You can't consume alcohol in Malaysia? Only because you read a news about a Malaysian, who was also a muslim model, who was arrested for drinking alcohol in public. Yeah, that news went global because western countries love stories like that. The reality though, is far from what's being reported overseas. So, they said you can't consume alcohol in Malaysia? Guess what, alcohol in Malaysia is probably one of the cheapest. Ask those backpackers.

It's true that Malaysia is probably NOT the most EXCITING country in the world, but people who claim Malaysia is the most boring place on earth have probably only been in one or two places on earth other than their own home country.

Seriously, go to Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei and you'll know what boring is. Go to Pyongyang in North Korea and you'll know what being confined means (especially if you don't look Asian and carry a big camera!). Go to Thimphu in Bhutan and you'll know what quietness really means. I loved these places though, but some people may find it boring.

In my opinion, someone is ONLY entitled to mark a place as being "the most boring place on earth" ONLY IF he/she has been to at least 80% of all the capital cities in the world. If you're only sitting in your chair reading about other countries or have ONLY been living in your home country all your life, then sorry, your opinion doesn't count. Go out there and see the world and then we'll talk.
